World Natural Heritage site

The central part of Shiretoko peninsula and the coastal sea area are registered as a World Natural Heritage site. Still now, nature remains untouched here. You can see ecosystems in Shiretoko including natural forests and wild animals such as brown bears, Blakiston's fish owl and Steller's sea eagles.

Caldera lakes

Hokkaido has many Caldera lakes which are famous sightseeing spots. Lake Kussharo is the largest Caldera lake in Japan. Lake Mashu has one of the clearest waters in the world. Lake Akan is known for beautiful mysterious marimo, known as moss balls. Lake Shikotsu is the northernmost ice-free lake in Japan.

Hot springs

Hokkaido has many popular hot-spring villages and from many of the hot springs you can enjoy magnificent natural landscapes. Types of water vary among different facilities according to areas. Features of hot springs in Hokkaido are the views of nature which vary from season to season. Different types of hot spring baths are available raging from huge hot spring facilities of modern buildings to outdoor hot spring baths in the mountains.
